IELTS listening section comprises 4 parts. Each part in this section contains a recording. Candidates are required to listen to the recording and answer the questions that follow. IELTS listening analyses the ability of the candidates to-

This assessment in IELTS is of 30 minutes. It has a total of 40 questions, with 10 questions in each part. An additional 10 minutes is given to writing down the answers in response sheets. The 4 sections are explained below:

IELTS Listening Tips

  • Read Question Carefully: Prior to playing the recording, candidates are given time to read questions. Thus, one should read the question carefully to get familiar with it. Since the recording is played once, getting familiar with the question is necessary.
  • Keep Making Notes: Keep writing answers as you listen to the audio. You will be given 10 minutes to transfer your answers in the booklet. Re-check that you have transferred your answers correctly. Also check for spelling and grammatical errors. Remember to complete your answer sheet. An incomplete answer sheet might lead to bad scoring.
  • Try to Work on Keywords: Remember the keywords mentioned in the question. Later on listen to the audio based on the keywords highlighted. Listening carefully to the audio would allow candidates to find the keywords relevant to the given choice of answers.   • Keep a Check on the Word Count: While you write your answers, remember the word count instructions given for each question. For example, if the instructions say “write no more than one word” and you write “the train” instead of “train”, your answer will be marked as incorrect.

IELTS Listening Marking Criteria

In the IELTS listening test, candidates receive one mark for each correct answer. The total number of credits awarded out of 40 is then converted into an IELTS band score. IELTS Listening Exam Pattern

In the IELTS listening test, candidates listen to four different audio clips. Based on the audio clips, candidates answer a series of 40 questions in this assessment. Correct responses are awarded with good IELTS listening band scores. IELTS general listening score and IELTS academic listening are evaluated based on:

  1. 4 recordings in different accents and natives of English.
  2. These recordings are only played once.
  3. 10 or more relevant questions associated with each recording are presented.
  4. 30 minutes are allotted to the candidates to accomplish each task.
  5. 10 minutes are allotted to transfer the answer to their respective sheets.
  6. Computer-based test does not include 10 minutes extra time for transferring answers because they are already mentioned on the screen.
  7. 2 minutes extra time is allotted for candidates appearing in computer-based tests to review their answers.

Candidates in the IELTS academic listening test are assessed based on evidence of the candidate's ability to understand the ideas and detailed factual information. Moreover, the IELTS listening score is credited based on the opinions and attitudes of speakers. IELTS band scores is credited based on purpose of utterance and evidence of candidate’s ability to follow development of ideas.

The questions types in this test include multiple choice, matching, plan/map/diagram/ labeling, form/note/table/flow-chart/summary and sentence completion.
